Dentistry in the Netherlands

In the Dutch health care system, there are 238 active health care professionals for every 10.000 people (1998). From a European perspective, this makes our country an 'average joe'. As a comparison: the leader, Norway, has 714 and Spain, at the bottom of the class, has 119. The United States comes out at 326.

As far as dentistry is concerned, there are 7,600 fully qualified dentists that are 64 or younger available to practise in the Netherlands. Of this group, 26% are younger than age 40 and 37% are aged between 50 and 65 years.

In addition to dentists, there are two kinds of dental specialists that work in the Netherlands. These are approximately 280 orthodontists and approximately 200 oral surgeons aged 64 years or younger. Of the aforementioned group of 7,600 dentists, approximately 5,900 work in their own practice. The NMTstudies show that 39% of these involve practices in which, in one manner or another, a cooperation is arranged with one or more other practice owners.

In addition, nearly 20% of the dentists employ one or more practice employees. The average (cooperation) practice comprises 2,700 patients that visit the practice at least once a year. Dentists are assisted by around 12.500 assistants and nearly 2200 dental hygienists.

To the extent that they are not active in their own practice, or are not active full-time, dentists are employed elsewhere (at universities, post-secondary educational institutions, Centres for Specialised Dentistry, the Ministry of Defence, etc.) or are employed in another dentist's practice or as a practice employee or substitute.

Currently, nearly a quarter of the dentists are women. The majority of dentists in training are women. Of the 210 students that took up the study in the 2001-2002 academic year, 62% were women. It is therefore expected that the gender ratio within the active profession will change over time.

This fact may - in combination with the gradually changing attitudes in Dutch society regarding the relationship between one's work and personal life - result in the already existing shortage of dentists becoming even more acute in the future.
